How AI generates images and video: an explanation without equations

A practical explanation of generation, references and temporal consistency, and why a plausible result still needs review.

A generative model produces a new result guided by learned patterns and your inputs. It is not simply revealing a hidden photograph or executing a conventional animation timeline. That distinction explains both its creative flexibility and the mistakes you must check.

From a description to a new visual

A prompt communicates the subject, setting and other constraints. Many image and video systems build a representation through a sequence of refinement steps; diffusion is one widely used family of approaches. The exact architecture differs between models.

The useful idea for a creator is that the system proposes a visual interpretation. It does not know which detail is essential to your client unless the brief and references make that importance clear.

Why references help without locking every pixel

A source image supplies appearance and composition more directly than a verbal description. Supporting references can convey a material, character or environment. They still have to be interpreted by the selected workflow.

Explain each file’s role. Conflicting images or instructions can make the task ambiguous, and a reference does not guarantee exact identity, product geometry or lettering. Keep the original for comparison.

What makes video harder

Video needs coherence across time as well as a convincing frame. The subject, viewpoint, light and motion must remain understandable from beginning to end. A model can create a beautiful first image and still change a hand, face or object later.

Describe one clear action and a camera instruction that supports it. If a story requires exact cuts or several distinct actions, separate shots are often easier to review and assemble than one overloaded request.

Use the explanation to improve your workflow

Reduce unnecessary changes, make important details visible in the source and evaluate the whole result. A strange hand is not solved merely by asking for a larger file. An unclear movement reference is not repaired by a more enthusiastic adjective.

Generated visuals can illustrate an idea, but their plausibility is not evidence of historical, scientific or factual accuracy. Use authoritative material for the claim and treat the generation as a reviewed creative representation.

Choose a relevant model

Use the current model and settings in the studio. The total cost of a usable result includes attempts, source preparation and any finishing edits.
